WHEN WE’RE NOT TAKING WALKS AND INFINITE SWIMS I CHASE THE SUN AROUND OUR APARTMENT AND GET PAINT ON EVERYTHING.
Hello, I’m Nat. Through most of my life I’ve been lucky enough to have two homes: a Ukrainian village and a steelworks town, a forest slow down and a cultural whirlwind. A lot of my inspiration is born between these homes and their connecting land. Right now, it’s my coastal home south of Sydney with my partner where, when we’re not taking walks and infinite swims, I chase the sun around our apartment and get paint on everything.
Where ever I am, I take with me the greatest thing my family has taught me: pause to breathe, soak in, and appreciate… and a few quality items – a hand-carved book stamp with my family name, good knives and good paints. I don’t feel calm unless I’ve had my feet grounded and my lungs full of fresh air. That moment – closed-eyed, feeling the comfort and scale of the world – is what I try to capture in my paintings. I hope when you glimpse it on your wall, it’s that little breath of fresh air you maybe didn’t know you needed. It’s perspective and it’s liquid gold.
We didn’t have much growing up, so what we had was quality and resourcefulness. I’ll always believe in keeping things simple and long lasting, so I work with local, quality goods – canvases that are hand stretched and built from sustainable fibers, materials made with love for the art, paints in their oldest, purest form: oil and pigment.
While you’ll mainly find paintings and inks here, part of my regular process is exploring other mediums. Whatever the form, my work focuses on one thing I’ve always been drawn to: moments that stop your thoughts in their merry tracks. Dusty sunset pinks on a secret track, the shadows on your wall on a warm Sunday morning, crumpled laundry …. I’m not kidding about this last one. Whether it be a pause for humour, curiosity or memory, I find these little breaks help with perspective and being present. My advice for art is simple: follow the ones that stop your thoughts – or your scrolling. Feel free to give me a call if you have any questions.
